Cosmos Okoro, Enugu -Former Governor of Abia State and Senator representing Abia North Senatorial District, Senator Orji Uzor Kalu who has also been touted as a key presidential hopeful has been accused of reportedly dropping his presidential ambition and working against the Igbo Presidency Project.
Kalu, who governed Abia for eight years and also took a shot at the presidency in 2007 had for some time been touted as a possible presidential hopeful with his joining the All Progressives Congress and victory in the 2019 polls.
The group, Igbo Presidency Mandate Project told realpoliticsnigeria.ng that Kalu who is also the Majority Whip in the Senate had reportedly dropped hus ambition, preferring to emerge as running mate to a key Northern candidate from the North East zone of the country.
They accused Kalu of again betraying the Igbo agenda for his selfish interest and urged him to retrace his steps or face.the wrath of NdiIgbo.
In a statement put out by its Chairman, Dr. Okey Anigbogu , Kalu was only trying to scuttle the Igbo Presidency Project so that he could be settled with the position of Vice President.
However, a source close to Kalu who did not want to be mentioned, confirmed to realpoliticsnigeria.ng that Kalu’s main reasons for wanting to drop his ambition is due to the fact that the SouthEast as a zone does not have the support of a majority of blocs in the party. Since politics is about numbers, Kalu much believes that an Igbo Presidency in 2023 isn’t feasible and thus his preference for a vice presidential slot.
The source addeed that this was the reason why Kalu had been taking positions deemed as inimical to the position of those rooting for power to return to the South.
” If you remember, he, Orji Uzor Kalu was the first to deny that there was nothing like zoning in the All Progressives Congress, and on two occasions the same man has called for the Caretaker and Extraordinary Convention Planning Committee to remain in office despite the fact that it has apparently overstayed its time in office. Its a script and what Kalu is doing is part of such a script.
“Nigerians, particularly NdiIgbo should not forget the role Kalu played in scuttling the Igbo Presidency Project in 1999 and 2003. Igbo leaders and the Igbo political class should wake up before it is too late ” The source said.
Efforts on our part to reach Senator Kalu proved abortive as at press time, he had not returned our calls to him nor responded to our text message which required his response to such allegations.
