James Agozie, Awka- APGA gubernatorial hopeful and former Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, Professor Chukwuma Charles Soludo’s Guber ambition might be suffering some form of relapse owing to a misunderstanding as to where the funds for the prosecution of the guber election will come from.
realpoliticsnigeria.ng gathered this from a source within the state government who did not want to be named. The source told us that all is not well with Soludo’s camp as the needed funds to prosecute his guber ambition will not be sourced from the coffers of the Anambra State Government. Although the incumbent, Governor Willie Obiano is alleged to be backing the former governor of the nation’s apex bank, the governor has not yet agreed to support Soludo financially as he expects the former CBN Governor to provide a majority of his campaign funds. This, our source said has nearly rocked Soludo’s chances as a number of government officials who are not too keen on a Soludo becoming governor have decided to use such a perceived misfortune to champion the emergence of other candidates such as Chukwuma Umeoji and Akachukwu Nwankpo, key contenders who they perceive possess the financial wherewithal to muscle other parties in the November 6 polls. Although the incumbent governor is not having such, he has pointblankedly told Soludo that with the need to deliver the cargo airport, stadium and International Conference Center before leaving office, the state does not have the luxury of sustaining a campaign of such magnitude with State funds and would prefer that the Isuofia born politician fund his own election or at least raise from.close friends and family.
Another area of friction is likely to be the issue of who will be Soludo’s running mate in the polls should he emerge. For the incumbent governor he believes that it is his sole right to lump Soludo with a deputy governor of he, Willie Obiano’s choice. Soludo however wants whoever will be his deputy to be the decision of a three man triumvirate somewhat, comprising of himself, Obiano and former APGA National Chairman, Senator Victor Umeh. This latest stance of Soludo is said to have rubbed off on the governor negatively. On the issue of who will be running mate that is not the only bone of contention, for Soludo, the economist has been tinkering with the idea that he might prefer a woman to run as his deputy while Obiano is said to favour a male who is also a sitting member of the State House of Assembly. ” The governor is insisting that he picks singlehandedly Soludo’s deputy, this Soludo has mildly objected to and has been courting Senator Umeh to help him convince Obiano to at least accept his choice or jointly pick another choice but definitely not the House Member, who Soludo sees as a hardsell and not competent enough” our source said.
